FFXIV FanFest 2017 Coverage – New Job is Samurai!

Arguably the biggest reveal of the entire #FFXIVFanFest2017 was that of the new job introduced for Stormblood, the Samurai. Much to many people’s dismay, the newly revealed job will in fact be a Melee DPS class and not a tank.

The decision to add another DPS class in the next expansion was met with a mixture of jubilation and honest concern.

On one side of the coin you have the people that wanted the Samurai to compliment the current tanking roster. Three tanking classes currently exist in the game in the form of the Warrior, Paladin and Dark Knight. The concerns from camp ‘SAMTANK’ are that queue times will be heavily punished due to previous tanks abandoning their roles in favor of the newer sexier Samurai.

Yoshi P (the games big boss man, director and producer) attempted to quell these worries by reiterating that the team are hard at work redesigning the existing tank classes to ensure they stay fresh and appealing. They didn’t go into too much detail about how they plan on doing so but we do know that abilities will be added and pruned with the intention of making classes such as the Paladin (named specifically) able to stand on their own two feet against the Samurai and Red Mage.

On the other side of the coin, you have those (like me) that simply cannot wait to get their hands on a sword wielding melee dps job!

My personal prediction is that there may be an initial influx of Samurai and queues may be slightly affected by it, but given time, will also balance out relatively quickly.

FFXIV FanFest 2017 Coverage – Return to Ivalice

‘Return to Ivalice’ will make it’s debut in Stormblood as the new 40 player alliance raid.

The project is being overseen by FF veteran Yasumi Matsuno ‘the father of Ivalice’. Matsuno has previously worked on Final Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy Tactics.

Boss design will be championed by Keita Amemiya, who has previously worked alongside FFXIV during the FEAST campaigns.

We still don’t know that much about the new raid but can’t wait to get our hands on some in-game footage. Keep your eyes peeled!

FFXIV FanFest 2017 Live Stream Issues

So the live stream has started and it’s now been live for 45 minutes at the time of writing this. The stream has been suffering some performance issues with many viewers taking to Twitter to voice their concerns.

The stream is hosted at cleeng.com, a site/service I have not heard of before but here’s to giving them the benefit of the doubt and hoping that they can stabilize the performance before the opening keynote starts.

But hey, the accompanying music is as beautiful as ever!

*Update: As I write this (8:49am GMT) they have just taken the stream offline. Hopefully for maintenance to fix some of the issues we’ve been experiencing. Fingers crossed!

UPDATE#2 – The stream was stabalized before the show began. Since then it has been running without any issues. Good job #FFXIVFanFest2017 and Cleeng.com!
